Out of the goodness of its non-existent corporate heart? Or because profit-sharing became part of the contract in lieu of raises during a down economy? The latter is a perfectly acceptable and rational reason, but it's fatuous to claim any for-profit corporation is doing much of anything for employees that it isn't contractually or statutorily bound to do.

Meanwhile, GM is cutting 14,000 jobs, and Ford cut 20,000 globally last year. It'll be FiatChrysler's turn soon enough. Then you'll see the same guys like Frostie bitching about how poor FCA can't pay it's bills because of these mandatory payouts that the eeeeevil unions forced them into.

Not all unions are evil, but they can become so. At the end of the old GM, they were a pension and health insurance company that made cars on the side.

    Not a recipe for success.
