Now, Dan, be fair. When you have to staff the booth and hand out tchotchkes to the actual convention attendees (not to mention accommodating their baser inclinations), it doesn't leave much time or energy for seeing the sights.

Oh bullshit I've done that dozens of times.

But I wanted to make sure I had fun, not be miserable and blame everyone else around me for it. I like my neighbors too, as well as my South American girlfriend.

If you were also securing your job on your back, as one person here has claimed to have done, I really don't want to hear about it.

I had an apocryphal relative who carefully watched his step wherever he traveled, and was delighted at the return. He had a talent for spotting coins, for example. He found a Sacajawea dollar at Niagara Falls, and even a 10 Franc note near the Eiffel Tower (this was some years ago, of course—it's all Euros now). Mostly it was small stuff. I remember when he emptied his pocket of about $1.35 he found walking around near the Gateway Arch in Missouri. I think his most prized discovery were two casino chips he found on the streets of Las Vegas. One, he said, was an especially fine catch, having been mostly hidden under some paper and debris. It didn't mean much to me; I was rather young.

He took a peculiar pride in his careful habits, and he would describe the importance of keeping the sun at your back, but avoiding overlong shadows that make it hard on the unaided eye. Sometimes, when I see beachcombers with metal detectors scouring the sand on the Falmouth beaches overlooking Martha's Vineyard, I'm reminded of my late relative, and the satisfaction he took from the treasures he found underfoot, regardless of the preoccupations of those around him.
"The way I see it, there's always, c'mon, there's always money. It's there." —Elizabeth Warren, explaining socialism.

“The interesting thing about the Green New Deal is it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all.... We really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing.” —Saikat Chakrabarti, then AOC's Chief of Staff.

"We have to stop demonizing people and realize the biggest terror threat in this country is white men, most of them radicalized to the right, and we have to start doing something about them." —CNN's Don Lemon, showing how to stop demonizing people.

"What is objectionable, what is dangerous about extremists is not that they are extreme, but that they are intolerant. The evil is not what they say about their cause, but what they say about their opponents.” ―Robert F. Kennedy.

Working is a waste of time? Tripping to Las Vegas for fun and games is a waste of time. Stupid to go to a place like Las Vegas August.
