    New York City

My wife just returned from a gathering with girlfriends in NYC. They saw some Broadway shows, enjoyed the restaurants.

(They saw different shows. My wife, a singer herself, goes extremely prepared, knows the music, the lyrics, plot details and etc. She saw Hadestown, raved about it. She saw Hamilton, a Wednesday night show, and came back disgusted. All the cast in the Playbill were replaced by minor league players [the program insert lists fourteen fill-ins] of second rate ability, with an exception or two. She sat in the orchestra center, row 6, but for the ticket price, $245, she saw overpriced community theater. Maybe Wednesday night shows suck. The set was tired and static, and most of the costumes looked worn out. We had planned to see that musical together at some point, but we're reconsidering.)

She also said the street bums were back, sleeping on the sidewalks, sitting in the doorways. Everywhere.

And she offered that the conversation of passing pedestrians was strikingly coarse, laden with F-bombs and such. It was an odd observation, out of the blue, so to speak. I wonder if there's anything to it.

Another high spot, besides Hadestown, were the restaurants, especially an Indian one.
“The interesting thing about the Green New Deal is it wasn’t originally a climate thing at all.... We really think of it as a how-do-you-change-the-entire-economy thing.” —Saikat Chakrabarti, then AOC's Chief of Staff, explaining the Green New Deal for the hard of hearing.

"We have to stop demonizing people and realize the biggest terror threat in this country is white men, most of them radicalized to the right, and we have to start doing something about them." —CNN's Don Lemon, showing how to stop demonizing people.

That's actually pretty close to a universality. Once a show has been on a while, they start rotating out the star talent for at least an additional night per week, since most theatres are dark one night a week (usually either Monday or Tuesday). This is, as much as anything, just a technique to give stage talent an extra night off per week. It really is pretty exhausting for someone to sing and dance for three hours six days per week.

Wednesdays, typically, are relatively low-attendance nights, so that's usually when the star talent is given that extra night off.

The flipside of that is that once in a while, you happen across some new, up-and-coming star talent that is really great. That happened to us in London quite a few years ago: we went to see A Streetcar Named Desire that had Glenn Close playing Blanche and I can't remember who now, but there was a real star of the London stage who was to play Stella. That night, the understudy filled in for Stella and she was absolutely outstanding, actually kind of showing-up Glenn Close. I feel certain that she later went on the greater things.
