    Ted Wheeler's Epiphany

Portland Mayor Admits Failure in Dealing with Antifa, Asks for Federal, State Help
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler admitted his policies in dealing with Antifa anarchists failed. He called for new enforcement actions and asked for federal and state assistance in dealing with the lawlessness.

“My good-faith efforts at de-escalation have been met with ongoing violence and even scorn from radical Antifa and anarchists,” Wheeler said in a New Year’s Day press conference. “In response, it will be necessary to use additional tools and to push the limits of the tools we already have to bring the criminal destruction and violence to an end.”

“It’s time to push back harder against those who are set on destroying our community and to take more risks in fighting lawlessness,” the Portland mayor continued.

The mayor’s remarks follow violent attacks by Antifa on Portland Police Bureau officers and destruction of businesses in the downtown district on New Year’s Eve. The anarchists attacked their officers with commercial-grade fireworks and firebombs. Antifa rioters threw at least two Molotov cocktail-style firebombs and launched multiple commercial-grade fireworks at Portland police as they attempted to defend the downtown business district and the federal courthouse.

“We should be clear what this was last night, it was about violence and criminal destruction, period,” Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell said during the press conference. . . .
I recall Mayor Ted declaring solidarity with the "protesters" and raining invectives down on the bad Orange President who offered assistance.

At minimum Trump should let this be Biden's problem.

A post-election epiphany by the cowardly mayor is too cheap to be honored.

Portland kicks off 2021 with a riot for the new year
Portland rang in the new year with a riot — as vandals wreaked havoc throughout the Oregon city, tossing Molotov cocktails and attacking law enforcement with rocks and bricks, police said.

The crowd convened around 7:45 p.m. near Chapman Square downtown, the heart of protests that raged in the city throughout 2020.

Portland police said at least two Molotov cocktails were thrown and commercial-grade fireworks were launched at the federal courthouse and Justice Center, which some rioters attempted to break into.

The crowd also set multiple fires and chucked rocks, bricks and frozen water bottles at officers from the Federal Protective Services and Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office. Some were struck by paint-filled balloons, which Portland police said may have been “laced with a caustic substance as it caused burning to the skin.”
I'm charmed by some of the euphemisms in this report:

The raucous protest broke up around 2 a.m. only after police used inert smoke and some impact munitions.

The belief of liberal Democrats that the anarchists are their natural allies, who only need sufficient assurance of the Party's empathy and support, was never grounded in reality. I agree with Daveman's gif above.

The usual Democrat whining: "I shit on my living room rug! Somebody else needs to clean it up!"

    Screw 'em.

Anarchists, antifa and such, are equal opportunity haters. They hate the establishment, and I think the liberal Democrats are fools to think they can win their allegiance. Here's the hapless Portland mayor again:

Portland Democrat Mayor Ted Wheeler Assaulted at Restaurant
Portland, Oregon, Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) was confronted and assaulted by a group of protesters Wednesday evening while he dined at a restaurant, according to police.

Local news reports stated that Wheeler was having dinner with a woman in the outdoor seating area of a northwest Portland restaurant when the protesters approached him.

“I think you need to leave,” Mr. Wheeler told a protester who filmed the incident, according to footage shared to social media by a “Defund the Police” account.
Breitbart here includes a tweet with video from Andy Ngo, who describes the intruders as "BLM-antifa extremists." Most sources I looked at carefully avoided labeling the "protesters."

I think it's sort of a Stuart Smalley complex: "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me."

They cling to the ego-centered belief that if the intruders—or any angry malcontent—just understood them well enough, the anger would dissipate and the malcontents would become loyal supporters.

I saw the same syndrome today among Republican and conservative pols, who joined the queue to try out their best rhetoric condemning the Trump "terrorists" and Trump himself, often enough. I think Sen. Graham was really disappointing today in that regard.

I think they hope to win the support of the liberals in power by virtue of their apologias. But looking for absolution is as foolish as snipe hunting. There will be no "healing," no renewed collegiality or genuine respect. Never. Libs in power won't abide the competition.
