    Let's have an Emergency!

Sequels are great, and that applies to generational retreads, too.

The COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic was "God's gift to the Left," said Jane Fonda, and surely a number of governors—and their influential backers—got an unimagined rush of power and glory by riding the "public health emergency," Newsom, Whitmer and Cuomo, among many of them.

As the Wuhan virus and its variant progeny now fade into the fog of pathogens we live in (e.g., Singapore to stop counting covid cases, officials will monitor it 'like the flu'), new "emergencies" are the fix these pols and influential backers desperately need. Hence,

New York Gov. Cuomo announces first of its kind 'gun violence disaster emergency,' targets manufacturers
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order on Tuesday, declaring a "first-in-the-nation" disaster emergency on gun violence, and outlining several steps the state will be taking to quell the bloodshed, particularly that which affects at-risk youth.

Speaking to an audience at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, the Democratic governor also signed legislation that closed "a loophole that allowed people with outstanding warrants for their arrest to purchase guns," according to a Tuesday press release.

Cuomo began his press conference touting New York’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic. He said 51 people had died over the Fourth of July weekend, while only 13 had suffered COVID-19-related deaths.

"We went from one epidemic to another epidemic. We went from COVID to the epidemic of gun violence. And the fear and the death that goes along with it," Cuomo said. "When you look at the recent numbers, more people are dying of gun violence than of COVID … we’re losing young people."
A number have declared climate change a public health emergency. California, for example.

A number of governors declared racism a "public health crisis," including Whitmer (MI), Evers (WI) and Sisolak (NV). The word crisis is a diminution of emergency, perhaps since declaring an Emergency invokes special powers, and (theoretically) a time limit. Crisis, on the other hand, is more for dramatic effect, and perhaps a tactical advantage over opponents to whatever initiatives the governors pursue.

The rush is on, to cash in before public intolerance builds and the declarations have no effect.

We've seen all this before, of course. At least us oldsters have.

Right now the rush of power accompanied the declaration of a public health emergency. In a previous generation, that rush accompanied the country's war efforts, particularly "The Good War."

So we went through years of declaring "war" on stuff, The War on Poverty, and The War on Cancer prominent among them. Eventually the war diminished to fight, and we were fighting breast cancer, smoking, obesity and whatever.

So we turn these words, war and emergency, into metaphors, and beat them into irrelevance with overuse. Before we grow completely numb to them, of course, we see them for what they are, covers for power grabs and government expansion (I repeat myself). They are dangerous, though, like successive storm surges that erode the beach in front of a row of houses.

I fully expect to be alive for the next round of euphemisms, if the beach house still stands.

The left has a way of overusing words to make them useless. Homophobe, racist, and misogynist.

Its what they deserve for crying "wolf" all the time.

Climate crisis ‘will be worse than COVID’: Schumer

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Wednesday that the climate crisis will be worse than the coronavirus pandemic and that Democrats are ready to respond with "big, bold action" unlike anything the U.S. and "this world has ever seen before."

During a press conference with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., demanding climate action on Capitol Hill, Schumer said the country was at a "pivotal moment" to address climate change with Democrats now in power.

"This is a unique opportunity," he said. "We are surrounded by evidence of the climate crisis — the fires out West, the heat waves, the floods — everywhere you look.
Again with the fires. It was poor management of the land you tool. Good grief.

"We know that we can’t let this moment pass us by," he continued.
AKA, never let a good crisis, etc, etc.

Like mask mandates and lockdowns were ever about Covid. It was all about laying the groundwork. You'll be wearing a mask and won't be able to leave your house because RACISM!!11! in a minute.

    To paraphrase Carl Sandberg:

Sometime they’ll give an emergency and nobody will come.
“I do not aim with my hand; he who aims with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
    I aim with my eye.

"I do not shoot with my hand; he who shoots with his hand has forgotten the face of his father.
    I shoot with my mind.

"I do not kill with my gun; he who kills with his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
    I kill with my heart.”

Biden warns of the threat of climate change: ‘This is code red'

Delivering remarks in Queens, N.Y., on Tuesday after touring damage caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ida, President Biden warned of the dangers of climate change, saying, “This is code red. The nation and the world are in peril.”
    PERIL. Peril I tell you.

There's more in the video. Him and Schumer. Watch it if you have bulimia and need a quick purge.

No Joe...code red was getting Americans out of Afghanistan. This is just a scare tactic to push your $3.5 Trillion through.

I wonder if surgical masks will be required to fight the China India Climate Change or will we need to invent N96s or whatever the next noose around your neck will be.
