    China Says It Forced U.S. Navy Away from Disputed Islands In South China Sea as Tensions Rise

    Newsweek
    The Chinese military said it forced a U.S. warship away from disputed islands in the South China Sea, where both sides have defied military warnings to stay out of sensitive areas amid heightened military tensions between the two powers.
    [Senior Colonel Li Huamin, spokesperson for the Chinese People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command], who reiterated his country's "indisputable sovereignty over the South China Sea islands and their adjacent waters," issued a stern warning to U.S. forces operating in this contested region.

    "This has seriously undermined China's sovereignty and security interests as well as the international navigation order in the South China Sea," Li said. "We urge the United States to immediately stop such provocative acts, strictly control naval and air military operations, and strictly restrict the behavior of front-line naval and air forces so as to avoid any accidents."
    OK! We've been warned.

    I wonder if our ships have foxtails astern.

    China couldn't force a US Destroyer off a sand bar with a Tsunami.

    Here's the deal that China knows, but has to hide from everyone:

    The USA is the strongest military on the planet. The USA has complete air superiority over the entire planet. The USA has complete naval dominance over the entire planet. The USA has the most capable ground force on the entire planet.

    China has the USA beat in two metrics: the available size of an active/reserve infantry and the number of ground arms (including ammunition). Those are only relevant if the USA invaded China, which is not something we would not want to do.

    China has more ships in their Navy, but only in number and most of theirs are smaller and less capable as warships. Even if China had a Naval force comparable to the USA it still would be at a disadvantage because China has ZERO institutional experience in waging war with their navy. They've never done it.

    China's ground force is at an even greater disadvantage. Their victory in taking the Paracel Islands in 1974 is their last military victory. This battle is analogous to the US defending our own US Virgin Islands from invasion by Mexico with the military force of a few ships and a few thousand Marines that just happen to always be around the Caribbean. They don't have the command knowledge to win wars. They don't have ranks full of warriors.

    Also, as government agencies tend to do, most of their higher ranks are full of political favorites - why not if nobody has any actual combat experience? That would change in a few years if they were in a full-scale war, but they have a lot of deficiencies to overcome if they want to wage a war against any other professional military.

    They're good enough to defend their own country and that's about it, which is fine for us.

    This is bluster and the USA doing what we do best, flexing like we should. We may not be able to turn other countries into stable democracies, but we are very good at taking land, establishing overwhelming military dominance, and deposing leaderships.

    I appreciate your confidence. Maybe it's true.

    But I remember a story about some British navel commander maybe a century and a half ago who trotted ashore in a rowboat onto a hostile shore (somewhere in Asia?) to tell a notorious warlord to cease and desist his troublemaking against British trade. And they did.

    The Brit had the courage to do this, and the brigand had the wisdom to comply, because they knew that if a hair was ruffled on his pasty white head, the British Empire would avenge his honor.

    I don't think our present command projects that confidence. So your statement about our superiority in force ("The USA is the strongest military on the planet") comes up short because we have a deficiency in will.

    It depends on the top commander. Compare Trump and Biden.

    It is. All attacks on the US have been either to cause first world problem chaos (9/11) or to "speak truth to power" (Beirut and beyond). No military objectives have been lost since Vietnam, and that set of calamities was function of how much we trust the media.

    Red Dawn will not happen here anytime soon. At worst we will be mired in some Cold War type of proxy situation with Taiwan, get back into Afghanistan (doubtful), or have to take over large segments of Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Turkey to shield Israel.

    That used to be the standard of our Marines - it's why we had 20 guys defending an Embassy. Reagan screwed the pooch on that one in 1982 in Beirut and taught the Palestinian terrorists a lesson they are still milking. It was also the same lessons employed by Bin Laden in Somalia and later on by Al Qaeda, Daesh (Isis), and various splinter groups.

    Neither Trump nor Biden have the will, but that will is not required currently. For all the talk of how disastrous Afghanistan is now, the main takeaway is that it is no longer the terrorist powerhouse it was. LOTS of things have changed in 20 years, including the somewhat quiet graft and corruption of the UN that allowed Bin Laden and Saddam to operate freely.

    Attacking and hurting us did not and does not prove that the USA is a "paper tiger" and that was why Bin Laden did what he did. Manipulating the rules and feigning victimhood with the sponsorship of France doesn't mean anything as Saddam learned. The EU needs NATO and NATO needs the US.

    Our next great war isn't going to come from abroad, it's going to be from within. Pretty soon some of these anti-gun leftists are going to start thinking they can take and hold land here (and then drop their anti-gun stance) and our government is going to be feckless to stop it - until the government isn't and then that's going to be messy.

    Then there's the Mexico and Central American Cartel problem. That's going to be a true insurrection as the environment and social justice causes are co-opted by very corrupt people and there isn't really a way to stop that using our military.

    Under Biden, we will take care of this after the entire military completes mandatory diversity training.

    See you in about a year China.

    China forgets herself from time to time.
    The year's at the spring
    And day's at the morn;
    Morning's at seven;
    The hill-side's dew-pearled;
    The lark's on the wing;
    The snail's on the thorn:
    God's in his heaven—
    All's right with the world!
