    Interesting picture that shows how fragile and shallow the soil depth is above the arctic circle. This is an erosion area from spring melt runoff. Joyce is standing in it to give you a size perspective. Look how shallow the thickness of the tundra is at the edges. It's basically an old receded glacier moraine with a thin green carpet.

    The town of Wiseman that has about 11 year round residents.



    We lucked into stoping there on the 3rd and they were having their "4th" celebration then. Some folks from Fairbanks drove up. They all invited us to join in. Great grilled pork loin and bar-b-que mystery meat.

    I love that. July 4th celebrations in small towns.
    May we raise children who love the unloved things - the dandelion, the worm, the spiderlings.
    Children who sense the rose needs the thorn and run into rainswept days the same way they turn towards the sun...
    And when they're grown and someone has to speak for those who have no voice,
    may they draw upon that wilder bond, those days of tending tender things and be the one.
