Caution! U.S. Diplomats in Cuba Suffer Hearing Loss After Reported ‘Sonic Attack’

U.S. Diplomats in Cuba Suffer Hearing Loss After Reported ‘Sonic Attack’

    By Adam K. Raymond | August 10, 2017 | 11:15 am

Two State Department employees who fell ill while working at the U.S. embassy in Havana are believed to have been the targets of “acoustic attacks,” according to multiple reports. The employees suffered a “variety of physical symptoms,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Wednesday. She wouldn’t elaborate on the ailments, but did say that two Cuban diplomats were expelled from the U.S. in retaliation.

“The Cuban government has a responsibility and an obligation under the Geneva Convention to protect our diplomats,” Nauert said. “That is part of the reason why this is such a major concern of ours, why we take this so seriously.”

Nauert said the process of determining the cause of the “symptoms” is ongoing, but the AP reports “a covert sonic weapon” is to blame. The weapon resulted in “severe hearing loss” for the victims, the report says. CNN corroborated that with its own report saying an “acoustic attack” was responsible for the health issues.

A really strange story. You'd think the Cubans would want better relations with the US to get at our tourist money. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if it was the Norks or the Russians dicking around with the diplomats just to see what kind of crap they can stir up with us versus Cuba.

It's also come out now that a Canadian diplomat suffered the same hearing loss attack at around the same time. Weird.

They are stuck in the early 60s tech-wise so this sounds like some kind of cold war era tech. Whatever Soviets or South Americans resided there back in the day were probably not surveilled so it would take a bit of time and some thawing of U.S. relations to notice this.

It's possible it could be a modern Chinese weapon, too. China has, in some ways, picked up the mantle of trade with Cuba since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Some things I've read suggest the Chinese have sold/deployed some of their mil-tech on the island on the down low.

As an aside, their trade as flooded Cuba with other China-made goods. It's kind of weird seeing those old, lovingly cared-for 50's American cars tootling around Havana with the clatter of Chinese diesel engines under the hood. They're slowly becoming a viable alternative to the meticulous upkeep and "jury rigging" that has kept the original engines (or the Soviet replacements) running for the past 60 years.
